SEO for concrete contractors

The short answer

SEO for a concrete contractor is mostly two things: ranking in the map pack for the services you pour, and owning a page for each city you serve. It takes 60 to 90 days to move and it does not stop when you stop paying, which is exactly the opposite trade-off to advertising. That is why the two belong together.

The case for it, with a real number

Valley West Concrete had saturated Langley. We built two location pages and three Google Business Profiles for Vernon, Kelowna and Greater Vancouver. Ninety days later the return was 17× on everything spent, with no advertising budget at all.

Those two pages settle at roughly ten leads a month between them. At a 30% close rate that is three extra jobs a month, every month, from work that was done once. The full arithmetic is published on the case study, including the assumptions, because a bare multiple with no inputs is worth nothing.

Where concrete searches actually end

Most of them end in the map pack, not the blue links. Somebody searching "concrete driveway Surrey" gets three businesses with a map, star ratings and a call button, and a large share never scroll past it.

That changes the priority order. A beautiful website that ranks fourth organically loses to a well-run Google Business Profile ranking second in the map pack. So the profile comes first: categories chosen deliberately, service areas set to where you actually pour, full service list, photo cadence, and review velocity that does not stall in February.

The Google Business Profile work has its own page because it is that large a share of the result.

Location pages, done so they do not backfire

Location pages are the highest-return asset in contractor SEO and the easiest to do badly. Spin up thirty near-identical pages with the city name swapped and you have built a doorway network, which Google filters and which can drag the rest of the domain with it.

The test we use: can you write 600 genuinely different words about that market? Not 600 words of padding, but real differences. What people build there, what the ground and the weather do to a pour, which services carry the market, where the competition actually sits.

Our own city pages follow the same rule, which is why there are five of them rather than thirty.

What the work actually consists of

Local SEO work by area and timeline
AreaWhat happensWhen it shows
Google Business ProfileCategories, service areas, service list, photos, posts, review flow2–6 weeks
TechnicalSpeed, mobile, crawlability, schema, internal linking, canonicals2–4 weeks
On-pageTitles, headings, answer-first openings, service page depth4–8 weeks
Location pagesOne page per market, written from real local knowledge8–12 weeks
ContentLong-form guides that earn links and get cited by AI answers3–6 months
Off-pageCitations, trade associations, supplier partnerships, podcastsOngoing

The link source nobody in this niche goes after

Marketing agencies chase directory links. Meanwhile the concrete trade has its own association and supplier ecosystem, and almost nobody works it: ready-mix suppliers, pump companies, forming suppliers, stamp and sealer manufacturers, and the provincial ready-mixed concrete associations.

These are high-authority, genuinely relevant, and reachable through relationships you may already have. A reciprocal referral page with your ready-mix supplier is worth more than a hundred directory submissions and takes one conversation.

Writing for AI answers as well as search results

An increasing share of searches never produce a click. The homeowner asks an assistant and gets a synthesised answer, and what gets pulled into that answer is structured, specific content: comparison tables, defined terms, direct answers in the first sixty words.

So every page and post here opens with a direct answer before any preamble, uses question-shaped headings, and carries real tables rather than prose descriptions of numbers. That is not a trick, it is just what a well-organised page looks like, and it happens to be what gets cited.

SEO questions

How long does SEO take for a concrete contractor?

Sixty to ninety days before a new location or service page reaches steady ranking, and six months before the compounding effect is obvious. That is slower than ads and it is why most contractors should run both: ads for cash flow now, SEO for lead cost later.

Is SEO worth it if I already run Google Ads?

Usually yes, because they solve different problems. Ads stop the day you stop paying. Organic and map pack rankings keep producing, which is what lets you reduce ad spend in a slow month without the phone going silent. Valley West got a 17× return in 90 days on this side alone.

What is the difference between local SEO and the map pack?

The map pack is the block of three businesses with a map that appears above the organic results. It is driven mostly by your Google Business Profile, proximity, and reviews. Local SEO is the wider work: your website, location pages, on-page structure and off-page authority. Most concrete searches end in the map pack, so it gets weighted first.

Do I need a page for every city I serve?

Only for cities where you can write something genuinely specific: local job types, local conditions, local competitors. Near-identical templated city pages are the doorway pattern and Google filters them, which can drag your whole domain down. Five real pages beat thirty thin ones, and we will tell you which five.

Can I do this myself?

The Google Business Profile work, yes, and you should start today whether you hire anyone or not. It is free and it is the highest-leverage thing available to you. The technical and content work is where most contractors run out of evenings.

SEO compounds. Starting later costs more than starting slower.
