AB Two cities going opposite ways
Concrete marketing in Alberta
Alberta looks like one market from outside it and behaves like two from inside. Calgary and Edmonton are not moving in the same direction this year.
Alberta pours from roughly April to October with longer shoulders than most people expect. Calgary and Edmonton are moving in opposite directions right now, so one provincial budget split evenly between them gets both wrong. Every residential builder here needs a provincial licence, which makes the builder channel findable.

The season in Alberta
The honest pour season in Alberta runs about April to October, and the shoulders are longer than the reputation suggests. Winter work happens every year with heated water, heated aggregate, accelerators, blankets and hoarding, but the subgrade has to be thawed first, and frozen ground stops everything regardless of what is in the mix. What is unusual here is the south. Calgary runs through more than a hundred freeze and thaw cycles in a year because of chinooks, and a chinook can move the temperature fifteen or twenty degrees in a few hours. Water gets into a hairline crack, freezes, expands and opens it further. Edmonton does not get that. Edmonton gets a colder, steadier winter and a shorter season. So the two cities differ by only a few hundred kilometres and produce completely different repair demand.
What the market is doing
This is the clearest reason not to run Alberta as one campaign. In July 2026 Edmonton started 2,174 homes, almost exactly level with the 2,191 it started a year earlier, a one per cent change. Calgary started 1,504 against 1,889, down twenty per cent. Those are CMHC figures for the same month. Edmonton is holding and Calgary is cooling, which means new-build flatwork is a safer bet in the north of the province than the south this year, and the replacement market carries more of the load in Calgary. A provincial budget split evenly between the two cities is overspending in the softer market and underspending in the steadier one. It should be split on what each market is actually doing, and revisited when the numbers move.
Cover and clearances
WCB Alberta covers your workers automatically. It does not cover you. Owners, partners and directors are outside the scheme unless they buy personal coverage, which renews each year on the last day of December. The commercial half of this is the clearance letter. Before a general contractor puts you on a site they will ask WCB whether your account is in good standing, because if it is not, the liability can land on them. That is a two-minute check that decides whether you get the work. It is also worth putting on your own website, because a builder scanning three concrete companies is looking for the one that already looks organised.
This is a plain reading of the published rules, not advice. Your own position depends on how your business is set up, so confirm it with the board itself. The sources are linked in the table below.
The rules that shape the work
Every residential builder in Alberta has needed a provincial builder licence since 1 December 2017, and every new home needs warranty coverage: one year on labour and materials, two on distribution systems, five on the building envelope, ten on major structural components. It applies to homes whose building permits were issued on or after 1 February 2014. There are two useful consequences for a concrete company. The first is that your builder customers are a known, licensed, findable population rather than a guess, which makes a builder-facing page worth writing. The second is that the ten-year structural cover sits over your foundation and structural slab work. When a builder asks how deep your base is and what reinforcement you are running, that is the reason. Answering it well on a website wins bids before the site visit.
How marketing a concrete company differs here
Sell the diagnosis in Calgary and sell the calendar in Edmonton. In Calgary the homeowner with a lifting driveway is searching for an explanation before they are searching for a contractor, and almost nobody in that map pack explains what the clay and the chinooks are doing. A page that does, and that shows a proper compacted base and air-entrained mix, stops competing on price. In Edmonton the whole game is timing. Search volume collapses in winter and comes back fast in late February, so the contractors who stay visible through the dark months already have the spring booked by the time everyone else starts bidding. Both cities have work that nobody advertises: heated and hoarded winter pours, garage pads and rear-lane approaches in Edmonton, RV pads and grade beams in Calgary.
Provincial numbers, with sources
Every figure here carries where it came from and the day we checked it. We do not publish a number we cannot point at.

What we would run in Alberta
The same five channels everywhere, weighted for this province rather than averaged across the country.
- The Google Business Profile, because most concrete searches end in the map pack
- Local SEO, with a page for each city worth one
- Google Ads and Local Services Ads on the jobs worth the most to you
- A website that wins the comparison on a phone at night
- Tracking that ties a signed job back to the click that started it
Questions about Alberta
Should I run one Alberta campaign or two?
Two. Calgary and Edmonton are not doing the same thing this year, they do not share a season, and they do not share a repair profile. One campaign across both is priced for an average market that neither of them is.
Is winter concrete work worth advertising in Alberta?
Yes, and hardly anyone does. Heated and hoarded pours happen here every winter. The homeowner with a failing garage pad in January does not know it is an option, because no one has told them. That is an empty stretch of the market, not an impossible one.
Do I need a builder licence to pour concrete in Alberta?
The provincial builder licence applies to residential builders, not to every trade on a site. It still matters to you, because it makes your builder customers a licensed and findable group, and because the ten-year structural warranty on their homes sits over your foundation work.
When should I start advertising for spring?
December or January. Searches come back in late February, and the contractor whose campaigns are already running and already learning is the one taking deposits while everyone else is still setting up.
