S1 By type of work

Marketing for concrete driveway contractors

The short answer

Driveway work is a homeowner sale that starts with a failure rather than a plan. Search and the map pack carry almost all of it, the demand spikes hard in spring, and job-specific searches beat generic ones by a wide margin. The contractor who is already advertising in January owns the season before it opens.

How a driveway buyer searches

Nobody wakes up wanting a new driveway. Something happens first. The slab cracks across the middle, one corner lifts, the surface starts flaking after a hard winter, oil has stained it past cleaning, or the house is going on the market in six weeks and the driveway is the first thing anyone sees. That trigger is the whole sale, and it decides which words they type.

What they type is rarely "concrete contractor". It is closer to how the problem feels. Driveway replacement. Driveway cost. Can a cracked driveway be repaired. Concrete versus asphalt. How long does a driveway take. Those are different searches with different intent sitting behind them, and they are worth different amounts. Someone asking whether a crack can be repaired is three weeks from buying. Someone searching for driveway replacement cost in their city is close.

Two things follow. The first is that generic concrete terms waste money on this specialty, because the word turns up in countertops, planters, resurfacing kits and coursework. The second is that the answer-shaped searches are the cheapest way in, and almost nobody competes for them. A page that honestly explains when a driveway can be repaired and when it has to come out will collect people months before they are ready, and it will be the page they remember when they are.

Channels, ranked for driveway work

Not every channel suits every specialty. This is the order we would run them for a company whose main product is driveways.

Driveway work: what each channel is for
ChannelWhat it does hereWhen it paysWhen it does not
Google Business ProfileCatches the map pack, which is where most driveway searches endAlways. It is free and it is the highest intent traffic you will getNever, though it is slow if you are starting from no reviews
Local Services AdsSits above everything, charges per lead, carries the badgePeak season, when you want volume and can answer fastBefore screening is done, or if you cannot answer inside fifteen minutes
Google Search adsPrecision. You choose the exact jobs and cities you bid onFrom February, to be learned and settled before the rushBelow about $1,500 a month, where there are too few clicks to learn from
Local SEO and city pagesThe compounding half. Keeps working when the ads stopAlways, but expect 60 to 90 days before it showsIf you need work this week and nothing else is running
Meta adsCreating demand rather than catching itOff season, retargeting, and neighbourhood-level workAs the main channel. Driveways are a search product first

If you only do one thing, do the profile. Most concrete searches end in the map pack, and driveway searches end there more often than most, because the homeowner wants somebody nearby.

When the demand moves

Driveway demand has the sharpest curve in concrete. It starts climbing in late February, peaks somewhere between May and July depending on how far north you are, and falls away through October. On the coast the curve is flatter because the ground does not freeze. In Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg it is a cliff on both sides.

The mistake almost everyone makes is switching the budget on when the phone should already be ringing. By April every competitor in the city is bidding, so clicks cost the most they will cost all year, and a new campaign is spending its first three weeks learning at those prices. Starting in January or February costs less per click, arrives with the campaign already settled, and lets you book the first six weeks of the season before the season exists.

The other half is what to do in the off months. Pre-selling spring work with a deposit is the most reliable answer, and it is an advertising decision made in December. The slow season guide has the six-month calendar.

What we build for a driveway company

Build 01PAGES

A page per driveway job, not one services list

Replacement, repair, exposed aggregate, stamped, widening. Each gets its own page with its own photographs and its own price signal, because each is a different search and a different buyer.

  • Written around the searches, not the service list
  • Real job photos, before and after
  • A price range so nobody has to phone to find out
Build 02PROFILE

The Google Business Profile, run properly

Correct primary category, service areas that match where you really work, driveway services listed individually, and a steady flow of reviews instead of a burst once a year.

  • Categories and services set for driveway work
  • Photos added on a schedule
  • A review system that runs without you
Build 03ADS

Campaigns split by job, not by city alone

Separate ad groups for replacement, repair and decorative, each pointed at its own page, with a negative keyword list that keeps you out of countertops and DIY kits.

  • Several hundred negatives from day one
  • Local Services Ads once screening clears
  • Budget weighted to the weeks that matter
Build 04SPEED

Answering before the other two quotes

The homeowner who filled in your form filled in two others. Automatic text-back inside sixty seconds, then a written quote inside 48 hours, is worth more than any bidding change.

  • Text-back in under a minute
  • Every lead tracked to the job
  • Weekly note on what actually signed

Who this is for

Driveways are not one market. Three versions of this business come to us and each needs a slightly different weighting.

Replacement specialists. Most of the work is tearing out a failed slab and pouring a new one. The buyer is reactive, the season is sharp, and the money is in being found the week the decision gets made. Search and the map pack do nearly all of it.

New-build driveway crews working for builders. A different animal. The jobs come from relationships and repeat work, the volume is steadier, and a website is where a builder checks that you are organised before phoning. If this is half your work, read the foundation page too, because the builder funnel is the same.

Decorative driveway work. Exposed aggregate and stamped driveways sell on photographs, not on price, and that changes the channel mix. The decorative page covers it properly.

What it costs

Every price we charge is on this site, so here is the honest version for a driveway company. The Foundation Package is $3,500 one time, less credit for anything you already own that is worth keeping, with a floor of $1,200. That is the logo, the site with the driveway pages, the Google Business Profile and the tracking, in 21 days.

The 60-Day Booked Jobs Program is $2,500 a month plus a minimum $4,000 a month of ad budget that you pay Google directly. Sign the program and the Foundation Package drops to $2,000. The target is 15 signed jobs in 60 days from campaign launch, and there is no minimum job value, so a $2,400 repair counts the same as a $28,000 replacement. That matters more on driveways than on any other specialty, because the ticket sizes are so far apart.

Right fit, wrong fit

Good fit

This works if

  • Somebody can answer a lead inside fifteen minutes, or you will let us automate it
  • You have photographs of your own finished driveways
  • You can start spending before the season rather than during it
  • You are willing to explain your base and your mix instead of only quoting a number
Bad fit

This does not work if

  • Quotes go out days after the visit, or not at all
  • You want to be the cheapest quote in the city
  • Your budget only exists in June, when clicks cost the most
  • You need the phone to ring this week and nothing is built yet

Where driveway work is worth the most right now

Three markets where the driveway opportunity is unusually specific: Calgary, where chinook freeze and thaw cycles break slabs faster than almost anywhere in the country; Victoria, where an old housing stock makes replacement a bigger share of the market than new work; and Abbotsford, where rural driveways run long enough to change the job size completely.

Questions from driveway contractors

What does a driveway lead cost?

Plan around $110 a lead as a working figure across Canadian residential concrete, and expect real variance by city and by season. Driveway terms sit in the middle of the concrete range: cheaper than foundation repair, dearer than patios. In April and May you will pay the most for them, because everybody is bidding.

Should I bid on "concrete contractor" or on "driveway"?

Driveway, nearly always. Someone typing "concrete contractor" could want anything, including work you do not do. Someone typing "concrete driveway replacement" has a driveway, has decided it is finished, and wants a price. The second search costs about the same and converts several times better.

When should I start advertising for spring?

January, in most of the country. Homeowners start looking well before they can pour, and a campaign that is already running has already learned. Switching on in April means paying peak prices while the algorithm is still guessing.

Are Local Services Ads worth it for driveway work?

Usually yes, because you pay per lead rather than per click and the ads sit above everything else. You need the screening first. In Canada that means the applicable licences, insurance with a certificate in the same name you signed up under, and background checks in the categories that require them. Google publishes the requirements. Start the paperwork early, because it takes longer than the campaign does.

Do I need a separate page for driveways?

If you are paying for driveway clicks, yes. Sending a driveway search to a homepage that lists nine services makes the visitor do the sorting, and most of them will not. A page about driveways lifts your close rate and your quality score at the same time, so you pay less per click and more of them call. The landing page guide covers how to build one.

My competitor is half my price. What do I do?

Stop competing on the number and start competing on what is under the slab. Base depth, compaction, mix, reinforcement, control joints, and what happens in year three. Most homeowners have never been told why two quotes differ by $4,000. The one who explains it is usually the one who gets the job, and gets to keep the margin.
